Artist's Description

Faces In The Doorway is the latest piece from PaintingsByDarren. This abstract piece utilizes acrylic paints and inks combined with gold and copper leaf with patina, gold and copper foil applied with tar gel medium, pastels, along with gold and copper heavy body paints. If you look closely you can make out "faces" in the "doorway" towards the top left of the piece. These abstract yet recognizable faces were achieved when the patina medium was applied to the gold and copper leaf. Also apparent are the abstract images of birch trees mingled in with these faces. The strikingly bold and vibrant gold and copper foils and leaf lends a sense of shimmer to the otherwise earthly tones of this creation. This piece was completed as an "introduction" piece for an online art class I am currently in and is in keeping with the abstract, surreal, and dadaistic style from artwork in the early 1900's. I have been drawing and painting for almost 50 years now starting with that first box of Crayola 64 crayons I received when I was five years old. Over the years I experimented with pencils, markers, pastels, oils, acrylics, inks, and mixed media. I was and still am a HUGE fan of such Fantasy Artists as Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, Larry Elmore, and Keith Parkinson, just to name a few. I often would sit and draw fantasy creatures and castles along with some surrealistic landscape visions. About 25 years ago I started learning to airbrush and added that to my repertoire.
