Being a HUGE Salvadore Dali fan I wanted to create this piece in a surrealistic style using hand painting and airbrushing combined with collage techniques. I felt by using these techniques I could achieve a realistic and surrealistic look to the finished piece which is so apparent in Dali's work. On a 24 by 20 by 1.5 inch gallery wrapped canvas I started with an airbrushed background using acrylic paints and acrylic inks. Next came the collage elements applied with rubber cement. I used magazine cutouts for the city scene money and jewels. Then I attached some small metal gear like objects to add to the "industry like" feel I wanted in the piece. Finally I hand painted the chains and steel cables attached to the smoke stacks. The idea or story I want the viewer to feel is our struggle between the use of fossil fuels which are non-renewable, and our slow attempt to develop alternatives. We seem to be "chained" to these antiquated forms of fuel for power and I believe it is mostly due...
I have been drawing and painting for almost 50 years now starting with that first box of Crayola 64 crayons I received when I was five years old. Over the years I experimented with pencils, markers, pastels, oils, acrylics, inks, and mixed media. I was and still am a HUGE fan of such Fantasy Artists as Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, Larry Elmore, and Keith Parkinson, just to name a few. I often would sit and draw fantasy creatures and castles along with some surrealistic landscape visions. About 25 years ago I started learning to airbrush and added that to my repertoire.
